60th Birth Anniversary Celebrations of the 4th Druk Gyalpo

 

The season of celebration was up in the air with the streets lit up with decorations, portraits of Druk Gyalpos displayed everywhere and the environment in itself had a sense of joy and happiness. It was not only a marking of an event but the celebration of an occasion with the most genuine passion. It was finally here, the day most anticipated in the recent history of the Kingdom of Bhutan.

To commemorate the 60th Birth Anniversary of the 4th Druk Gyalpo of Bhutan, the Dzongkhag Administration, Thromde Administration, Regional Offices, Business Community and the public of Samdrup Jongkhar Dzongkhag worked together to celebrate the joyous occasion with various events.

The main celebrations started on the morning of 9th November in the Dratshang. All officials and public gathered at the Dratshang courtyard and the turnout of people was more than expected and it was even bigger than those in the past Tshechus. Butter lamps followed by Zhabten and Marmey Moenlam were offered for His Majesty's good health, long life and happiness. A 40 feet Guru Tshengye Thongdrel was consecrated and the people in attendance received blessings.

The Riverview Park located in the town was inaugurated followed by the inauguration of the Indo-Bhutan Friendship Park below the Border Gate. The people were happy to receive such infrastructure and that the developments were completed to coincide with the same day.

Towards the evening, there were variety shows exhibited at the public ground. Temporary stalls were constructed at the public ground with a center stage. A huge number of people attended that evening, some to visit the stalls, some to play games and some to watch the performances on stage, but all to attend the celebration on the joyous occasion. Staffs of Dzongkhag Administration, Thromde Administration, Schools, agencies and other offices presented Dzongkha dances (Zhungdra, Boedra and Rigsar). All dances were performed keeping in mind the importance of the celebrations and the dances were marked accordingly by the judges. Attractive cash prizes sponsored by Druk Satair Corporation and voucher allowances sponsored by B-mobile were awarded to top three winners of each category. The staffs of the Dzongkhag Administration were able to secure top position in the Boedra category and third position in the Zhungdra category.

On the 10th of November, the day kick started with offering of butter lamps, Zhabten and Marmey Moenlam. This day was reserved for sports and games to be organized. There were several matches of archery, khuru, doegor, badminton, etc. An open air gym was also inaugurated in the NHDCL colony. In the evening, a large crowd was gathered to attend volunteers' performance on stage at the public ground. A lot of dances performed making the show go late into the night.

Even on the 11th of November, butter lamps and Zhabten followed by Marmey Moenlam were offered for His Majesty's wellbeing and happiness. Immediately after that the civil servants and public gathered at the Samdrup Jongkhar MSS Ground where the main celebrations were organized for the day. The importance of the day was felt through the large attendance with people in their finest attire. The people got to witness Marchang, many of whom got to see it for the first time and Toeso was performed thrice on the same day by the RBG, RBP and Desuups.

People were as keen as ever during His Majesty, the 5th Druk Gyalpo's speech and to mark an even greater significance and happiness on the day was when His Majesty announced on live television that their Majesties were expecting a prince early next year. The news of the coming of the 6th Druk Gyalpo overwhelmed the whole nation, some had tears of utter joy in their eyes, a "Dragon Prince" were on the lips of every people.

The civil servants joined the march past along with the students and various dances were performed by the students and civil servants. Wang Zhey, which had not been performed for a long time in Samdrup Jongkhar was revived and performed on the day.

In the evening, a karaoke performance was organized at the public ground and people rushed to register their names to perform on stage. Even on that day, it ran till late night as the number of performers seemed to have no end. A bigger crowd was gathered in that evening as everyone wanted to join in the final day of celebrations.

Similar celebrations were also organized in the Drungkhags and Gewogs of Samdrup Jongkhar Dzongkhag

All in all, the celebrations were a huge success and it would be an event that will leave an impression and a bright memory in the minds of all people. The echoes of the prayers that we offered through the Zhabten shall linger forever. Everyone participated in the celebrations and this showed the love and affection for His Majesty in the hearts of the Bhutanese people for all the unwavering hard work and ingenious effort in building this nation to which we shall be forever grateful and we are truly blessed to have had the opportunity to serve under such leadership.
