Monitoring Visits to Rural Gewogs

On 28th March, 2016, a team from the Dzongkhag headed to Jomotshangkhag Dungkhag as part of monitoring visits for the ongoing development activities in the rural Gewogs. The next day the team traveled directly to Jompa Geog centre from Lanchenphu. The travel as compared to year ago where the team had to go a day walk to reach the Shaingkhar Lauri has been made easier through Gewog Center road this time. It was dreams come true not only for the rural people of Gewog but at the same time, enlightening moments for the Government Servant striving there.

On the same day, the team visited the Farm Road alignment dispute at site. The Farm Road is funded by GDG with the aim to connect Lauri Village. Once connected, it is expected to benefit more than 70 households. The team met with the Lauri beneficiaries to make them aware on the issues on Road alignment and brief them to support Geog administration hereafter. The visit was also visited the Singkhar Lauri Primary School.

On the second day, the team proceeded to Daptshang village to hand over the community forest officially to the beneficiaries. The Daptshang Community Forest comprised total areas of more than 300 areas. It is expended to benefit more than 54 households of Daptshang and Denphu Villages. The letter of certification and management plan was handed during the day. The main aim of the community forestry is to encourage sustainable community-based forest management system. This is also to encourage rural farmers to use indigenous knowledge and reduce poverty through income generation activities.

Dasho reiterate that CF should benefit equally keeping in mind to replenish the forest recourses before it is depleted. After the event the team visited the community Nursery which was seen encouraging and successful within a year time period. The interesting and innovative intervention was on the domestication of the Thogsampa (local name). The plant was found healthy and if it is successful it is going to fetch huge income to the communities. Presently, it is marketed to neighboring India coasting sum of Nu. 4000-5000 per kg. So after the first harvest from this domesticated plant it is highly recommended to promote at household level at the larger scale. It is also recommend carrying on the research extensively where possible for bulking the production.

Dasho also visited the rehabilitation project areas and reviewed the community Lakhang construction at Dawathang. In the afternoon, the team met with Dairy community of Langchenphu Gewog and finalized the permanent group members to kick of the community based marketing group. The main aim of the monitoring is to understand achievement and problems in the course of the time.
