History of the Dzong:

 

The construction of the outer structure was completed in 2003. However, it was just the skeleton of a Dzong and the major components like installation of Kuten Sungten, construction of Goenkhang and traditional painting were executed from 2003 to 2008. The Dzong in its complete for was formally inaugurated on 8th March, 2008 by His Holiness the 70 the Je Khenpo. The Samdrupjongkhar Dratshang was also instituted on the same day with thirty monks led by the present Lam Neten Sonam Tenzin. The construction of the Dzongkhag was commanded by His Majesty the King IV and funded by the Royal Government of Bhutan.

 

Structure:

 

The Dzong consists of a two-storied Utse enclosed by one-storied structures on the four sides. The Utse houses a Lhakhang on the ground floor and the Goenkhang on the top floor. The Goenkhang abodes the Goem Chamdrel Sum.

 

A new Dechhog Lhakhang was created following the grant of a Dechhog statue by His Majesty during the coronation. The Lhakhang houses a main Dechhog statue and the statues of his twelve Khor (retinue.The Lhakhang would also function as Rest Room for the VVIPs during visits to the Dzong.

 

The enclosing structures house the Lam Nenten’s residence, Umze’s residence, Lam Neten’s Office, Dungchen’s Office, General Office and Store and the Guest House.

 

Below the Dzong stand the new Drashar with 16 rooms, the Dining Hall and  the Zigrey . The Drashar shelters all the monks and Lams. The Dining Hall was completed in 2010 and the Drashar and the Zigrey in 2011.

§  In addition to the annual events, the monthly Duezangs  viz. Tshey 8, 10, 14, 25, 29 and 30 are observed every month with offering of butter lamps and appropriate prayers.

 

 

Properties:

 

·         Thanchu Goenpa under Phuntshothang Gewog was offered to the Dratshang by the public and it is the only Yenlag Dratshang under the Samdrupjongkhar Dratshang.

 

·         The Rabdey measured 3 acres of land in Samdrupchoeling and 4 acres in Jomotsangkha for establishment of Yenlag Dratshangs in the 11th Plan during the NCRP. 

 

·         The Dratshang has two vehicles- a Prado and a Hilux.

 

·         The land on which the Dzong is built is registered under the Dzongkhag as is the practice.

 

·         The Dratshang also takes care of the Lhamoi Goenkhang in the Dzongkhag Office and the Lhakhang in the Thrimkhang.

 

·         A new Neykhang and a classroom have been proposed in the 11th plan.  The Neykhang was commanded by His Majesty.
