Langchenphu

Background

Located at the extreme east of Bhutan, sharing its border with Arunachal Pradesh and Assam States of India. Langchenphu Gewog has a total area of 222.430 Sq.Km, consisting of 5 Chiwog that are further bifurcated into 15 villages, and has 284 households with overall population of 2091.

Langchenphu Gewog falls in a Sub-Tropical climatic zone and covered with wetland (Chuzing) suitable for most of agricultural activities. It experiences hot and humid weather during the summer. Langchenphu gewog gets heavy shower (Precipitation) from June till end of September and winter is cool and dry. The Gewog is bestowed with fertile clay soil suitable for agricultural activities and has potential to increase the economy of the farmers. Paddy is the dominant food crop grown by the farmers and cash crops consists of Orange, Betel nut, Ginger. The Gewog has initiated the integrated farming practices of Fishery and Piggery on large scale which is also expected to raise the local economy.

Most of the fertile lands of government are lying empty and unused; with lot of market opportunities as the gewog is in close proximity to Assam. Langchenphu gewog has a high prospect of carrying out mass cultivation of Rubber plant, Sunflower and Cash Crop such as, Orange and Ginger along with Diary Farming.

Langchenphu Gewog has poor and unstable road connectivity within its 5 chiwogs and has no road linkage to its Dzongkhag Headquarter other than road by Assam. The accessible farm roads are either blocked by soil erosion/landslides or washed by down pour of heavy rainfall, especially during the monsoon season wherein the implementation of planned programs/projects and effective public service delivery is been hampered/hindered.  Fluctuation in power supply, no internet connectivity, no banking services are some of the challenges the Gewog Administration has encountered so far, wherein timely public services deliveryand carrying out other administrative works are often delayed.

Due to the above reasons, the people of Langchenphu merely depend on subsistence farming, partly supported by livestock and non-wood forest products for sustenance with no other source of income generating programs/projects.
