Samdrupjongkhar Dzongkhag lies in the South Eastern part of Bhutan bordering the Indian states of Assam and Arunachal Pradesh. The Dzongkhag has a total area of approximately 1,877.67 sq. Km. The major portion of the Dzongkhag falls within the sub-tropical belt with elevations ranging from 200 – 3500 metres above sea level.
The Dzongkhag Administrative unit comprises of two Dungkhags viz. Samdrupchhoeling and Jhomotsangkha and eleven Gewogs viz. Orong, Deothang, Gomdar, Wangphu, Phuntshothang, Pemathang, Martshala, Samrang, Serthi, Lauri and Langchenphu.
Since 2001, the Dzongkhag has a reliable electricity supply from Kurichu hydropower station, Mongar. The Dungkhag Administration offices and all Gewog centres are also connected with telecommunication facilities. Beside, fixed telephone lines, Orong, Dewathang, Phuntshothang,
Pemathang and part of Wangphu, Gomdar and Martshala Gewogs also have B-Mobile connection. Existence of such infrastructures and with
normalization of security situation, the district has significantly improved its socio-economic development.
With large fertile plain area, rich mineral deposits and sub-tropical
climate, the district has high potential for agricultural and economic
activities. It is also the gateway and commercial hub for five eastern
districts with many industrial and mining operations.
